Q&A with Alina Wheeler

Yesterday our team had the pleasure of spending time with the ever-gracious, knowledgable and inspiring Alina Wheeler.

Alina Wheeler is the author of Designing Brand Identity (now in its 3rd edition) as well as Brand Atlas.  Alina is on Matchstic's advisory board and yesterday our whole team had the pleasure of spending time with her and asking lots of questions.  Here are some quotes from our time with her that stood out to me.

  • I used to care more about the type of projects I worked on, now I focus more on the people I get to collaborate with.
  • The best design doesn't always win.
  • RFPs are ridiculous. Companies should focus on hiring firms they get along with and share similar philosophies.
  • Be a citizen of the world. That's what makes you a good designer.
  • Make your clients the heroes.
  • Don't be afraid to fire the clients you can't get along with.
  • When someone is a jerk, show them compassion.  You never know what happened at their house that morning.

"Great quotes. When is Alina going to be a guest speaker at Creative Mornings?"

- Scott Fuller

"I'm not sure Creative Mornings could handle the awesomeness of Alina! She would be amazing, but we try to focus on bringing in ATL people for CM. She lives in Philly."
