Why do you work here?

This week I have conducted countless numbers of interviews for our open project manager position. Each candidate comes well prepared to discuss why they would be the right person for the job, but I was most intrigued with one question we received from one candidate...

Most candidates would ask good questions about the open position and would relate back to their experience or other reasons why they could take on the job with excellence.  Then we received this question…

"Why do you work here?"

First off, I think that's a great question and one that anyone interviewing for a job should ask.  The answers you get back will tell you a lot about what you're getting yourself into. And if there is a big disconnect between what the boss says and what the employees say, that will give you interesting insight into their culture.

Secondly, it's a question that any employer should ask their employees.  It will tell you a lot about your brand.  If the story you're trying to tell your customers doesn't match up to your internal culture, then you have some work to do.

As I sit here writing this I realize it's been a while since I specifically asked this question of our team.  I'm gonna ask today.

"I'd love to see the answers from the Matchstic team, especially since I'm one of your applicants.

It's usually not hard to tell when there's great synergy within a company. It'll look a lot like Matchstic :-). But it's still a great question to continually ask."

"It was a great question. Like I said to the candidate who asked it In the interview - I work at Matchstic because I have the opportunity for felt impact. Tangible impact for both our clients and as a part of our team. Talents applied actually acts as a catalyst for positive change. And it's a change and a process people enjoy. You get to break down a business problem and then tackle it with art. And with awesome people to boot. As far as I'm concerned, it's the best mash-up I could possibly imagine."
