Lessons from Sid’s

If you haven't visited it before, you should. Sid Mashburn in Atlanta's Westside is one of the most detail-oriented, brand-effusing (and yet not forced) experiences I've had in a while. And I don't even like to shop for clothes.

Five minutes in I was overwhelmed. There were not that many clothes, and yet somehow I felt like there were. I wanted to look at everything in the place. From small photographs on the walls, to the mounted deer head and busy tailors stitching away in the back – the place gushes with nothing short of southern genteelness.

Thankfully the experience was a gift, or soon after awkwardly asking how much something cost I would have promptly returned the item to the rack and walked myself out the door. Nonetheless, it had an air about it that made me want to stay, want to peruse, and want to be a part.

Why? It was in the details. The feel of the place. It felt like my grandfathers study – that sense of seasoned comfortability. And that's what made it great – the ways in which they subtly, gently, and even delicately pulled off a high-end men's clothing store.

Two hours later I left, my wife ready to leave before me (I think a first in our marriage when it comes to shopping).

Clothing for the southern businessman. An amazing experience, even if you're not buying.

Because he’s mostly known for fine tailoring and custom suits, the store has gained a reputation of being inaccessibly high-brow (until you actually go in and meet them). [...]"
