Ten Questions with Hiu

Meet Hiu Lee, the other recent addition to our team. Aside from design muscle, he brings with him a geographically diverse upbringing, several spoken languages, a penchant for fast cars, homemade Korean barbecue, and Katy Perry's discography.

Who are you and what do you do?M
My name is Hiu and I love my 45 minute commute to work.

Where are you from?
This is always a tough question for me, since I moved around a lot. I was born in  the Canary Islands of Spain (Las Palmas) and soon after lived most of my life in West Africa. But ethnically I am neither Spanish nor African, but Korean.

How did you get into design?
I went to a K-12 international school in Senegal, which had a total of 200 students, but we always had an annual art contest which I really enjoyed participating in. However, everything was always fine art and unfortunately the only medium available to us. But somehow I always had photoshop 7.0 sitting on my computer and that really got me started exploring a new way to translate reality to paper.

First month impressions?
We love food here. I've really enjoyed how food can bring three Asians and three American guys together. But seriously, I feel as though coming to work and feeling at ease in a close-knit family is such an important element in a successful work environment. Matchstic really delivers that.

What do you bring to the table that's unique?
I can't wait for Matchstic to go International, I can be of great help when it comes to translating English to other languages. I hear that France is in need of a great branding agency.

Describe your style.
I'm always searching for something new. I hate playing the same music on my iPod, I don't enjoy driving on the same road everyday, I don't like eating the same food everyday either. So basically, I am always on a quest to explore and get lost, even if it means that I get mugged, browse iTunes for 3 hours or eat greasy food.

What inspires you?
People usually say music, but I believe music is just a vessel that helps trigger your inspiration and motivation. To be able to change someone's life through what I create, to me, is more precious than diamonds and gold. I guess my life purpose is the trigger to my inspiration and motivation.

Where is your favorite meal in Atlanta?
I'm a pretty big health freak due to large doses of P90X, but when I occasionally go out to eat, I do love Duck's Cosmic Kitchen in Decatur, Jason's Deli (just because they have a sweet salad bar!) and I guess Firehouse Subs (I love trying their wide varieties of hot sauces). (Big shout-out to those who are reading this and you participate in P90X! I hurt for you!)

What is your drink of choice?
Tony Horton tells me I should drink water and fat free milk. So I shall do as he says.
