Why Can’t NASA Be Cool?

NASA apparently does movie posters for every mission that all look like this. NASA needs an extreme brand makeover. They need to be working on the elementary kids big time. Growing up I really wanted to be an astronaut. I was fascinated by space, the planets, the unknown, the rockets, the pilots. My understanding was that first you started as a commercial pilot and based on performance were promoted to the Air Force then to the Blue Angels and if you were the best of the best you became an Astronaut. Essentially you were the ultimate fighter pilot. I loved the shuttle names, the history, all sorts of space movies, even space Legos. Now in full disclosure, I did grow up in Orlando, FL where stopping class to watch a shuttle launch was not uncommon. That and my parents were huge Trekies. But here's the deal NASA, forget today's generation. Except for Richard Branson, they'd rather stare at the ground. Work on tomorrows politicians, tomorrows venture capitalists. Tell them about the ginormous unknown unexplored mysteries of space. Send an Astronaut to every elementary school and start planting some seeds. Get some space cartoons back out there. Basically put some of that $18 billion of the federal budget into marketing. You know it ain't enough to get a rocket to Mars anyways. NASA you really are cool! You send people in rockets into space! Make us want to be Astronauts again!

"These posters make me want to be a professional knitter.
This is the kind of crap you expect from your dad when he's trying to make the family reunion seem cool. Of course him doing it makes the reunion seem even less cool."

"I guess the amazing thing for me is that for the price of a 6 pack of shuttle hatch bolts they could find a brand identity house to make it all better."

"What I wouldn't give to again see a kid with a fishbowl on their head and aluminum foil playing "spaceman". I guess these days the most we can hope for is that Nintendo will come out with a astronaut game for the DS..."
