Who needs an axe these days? According to Best Made Co., everyone: "Every high-rise condo, luxury office, executive suite, ranch house, and farmstead must have a Best Made axe in it. It’s not about membership or exclusivity: this world is a universal one, something that has no borders (hence our tag line: ‘everywhere')."
Best Made is a small company in Manhattan. They do one thing — make axes. Founded by an author/designer and outdoorsman/environmentalist, Best Made is yet another great example of how small business survives today — offering a small, often niche, selection but quality and artfulness. Less, but better.
For $200, you get domestically-made product that was crafted with pride. According to their website:
- All axes are made to order.
- Handles are made of Tennessee Hickory and each one is hand-painted, varnished, and polished in downtown Manhattan.
- The heads are made of fine-grain steel.
- All axes come securly packed in a hand-made wooden crate
Beyond the physical product, Best Made also emphasizes building relationships with the customer: "We spend a great deal of time reaching out to people on a one on one basis, and no one leaves without having heard from us directly." Being small and "slow" allows them to do this. To produce something they are proud of, and in turn share this passion directly with others and hopefully inspiring them as well.
"The notion of ‘mastering a tool' is a bit of fallacy: master your desire, and then the perfect tool will present itself."

"I've been thinking about buying one of those for like the past 4 months. I could totally write it off as a company mascot."

"Adam, you could have them paint the handle in your brand colors."
