Don’t Underestimate the Small Things
Posted by Craig Johnson on November 4, 2009 ShareWhether we admit it or not, there are certain aspects of a brand that are much sexier than others. Developing a very engaging and interactive website is a lot of fun and cool to show off. Designing really cool package that will be seen every day can bring a lot of pride both to the one designing as well as the client.
But there is opportunity in all aspects of the customer's experience of your brand. Tiny little opportunities that can be easily overlooked. Areas of that you're not currently leveraging to tell your brand's story. Here are a few possible examples:
• An Email Signature
• The way you answer the phone
• A Receipt
• A Coffee Cup Sleeve
• A Handwritten Note
• An Estimate or Proposal
• The FAQ page on your website
• A voicemail greeting
• An Invoice
• Being on Time
• The back of your business card
• Beating a Deadline
• A Napkin
• A PowerPoint footer
• A call to a Customer just to say Thank You
Try to think of one small thing you can improve upon today. Most of these won't cost you any money.
What did you think of? How will you improve upon it?

"Good stuff. For me, the small things are huge right now. Figuring out what my personal brand looks like in stuff like a bid/proposal took forever because I know that all of those details say just as much as a great photo i take."

"Great post Craig! There's so much we can forget or not even consider to do in our day-to-day that makes a big impression. This post is such a great simple reminder that I'm printing it out for my desk! Thanks!"

"My favorite is to always call people back or return emails, regardless of their relevance or value. Its a small thing that shows respect and dependability in a world that lacks that. Great post Craig!"
