Detroit Lions Rebrand

Monday, the Detroit Lions unveiled a new logo for their team.  This is one of my favorite things to write about because it combines two of my favorite things in life: Branding & the NFL.

After going 0-16 last year (first team ever in the NFL to perform such and embarassing feat) they really can use something to rally around.  The good news for the Lions is that they have the #1 pick in the draft this weekend and it seems that they'll be taking UGA's Matthew Stafford at QB.  And after the unbelievable turnaround that my Falcons had last year with rookie QB Matt Ryan, there is, if nothing else, hope for Lions fans.

I think the logo is a very tasteful upgrade for the Lions. It's a subtle, but affective change to make the lion "more fierce" than the old logo, "Bubbles" (in case you were wondering, yes, that is their mascot's name and yes, it's the worst mascot name ever).

At the end of the day, it's the Lions record at the end of the season that will decide whether they are great or not.  A logo will never make an organization great.  But often a change in attitude and vision is best adopted by a group of people when they can visualize it together.

Good luck Lions.  I'd love it if you met the Falcons in the NFC Championship game this year.  The NFL offseason doesn't give us football to watch, but it does give us the ability to dream.

"If they're picking Matthew Stafford, they'll have a lot more going for them than last year, that's for sure! That, and a sweet new logo. Loving the type and the mark. Works together really well. Do I hear a 16-0 in the future?"

"The Lions indeed need something to change, unfortunately I don't think the logo will be enough. Love the thought behind the rebrand, casting vision for a new identity within the organization and team.

I've gotta disagree with the new logo though, I just don't like it. The lion mark is more aggressive, but the type is terrible. I just don't like the visual compromise of the "shivers" in the typeface. It really is not necessary regardless of the goal. I can't find any old consistent type treatment to compare it to, so atleast they are setting some standards, even if they are bad. If the type doesn't work with the image it all falls apart for me.

"Now this is an incredibly tasteful upgrade the Cardinals did a few years ago. Blake, what do you think if it? http://is.gd/u0EC"

"Love it! I'd really love to see how the type works with it. Thats the challenge the Lions have. The Lion itself is not bad."

"being from Detroit and a die hard Lions fan, I've always felt it was, not the front office, not the lack of a stud quarterback, not the lack of playing in a dome, but the Honolulu blue team color that has caused this curse.

What color would ensure they turn the corner as a franchise. I'll leave that to the capable folks at Matchstic."
