Recently a section of the New York Times called City Room wrote a story about the World Trade Center. It seems the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has determined that the name "Freedom Tower" will detract prospective tenants from leasing space in the new building. The main reason being its strong message and symbolism which fosters either lovers or haters. They are tossing around the name "1 World Trade Center".
City Room decided to empower their readers and make their voices heard. Specifically the design community by proposing hypothetical logo solutions. They were allowed to use any building name they wanted but had to describe why. The comments are interesting. Some prefer the old name, some prefer the new. Some don't want a logo at all. It will be a symbolic structure for sure and a tremendous opportunity for an identity that could represent not just a city but a nation.

"I dont think you need a logo for something as symbolic as a new world trade center. Its basically a huge "F" you."

"Thanks Pato. Do you mean the new building or having a logo?
It doesn't just need a logo it needs a new identity. One that would represent so much more than just a building. It would give us (Americans) something to rally behind. Something more than our flag or eagles, it could symbolize never giving up, persistence, triumph, and change. Well, maybe not change. Someone has that pretty covered :)
Regardless, alot of pressure to design it right. Those designers better bring it."
